I wouldn't recommend hardening any brush

You can create a fine line with a normal brush but hardening just ruins it

if you want to save your self the trouble of going to some fancy art store just use the brush and wash it but dont leave it in water and it will harden in 4 hrs or so..

It is an art form in that it requires visualization to compose, and it is an art as it requires skill to produce. It doesn't require any deep thought or debate, the definition of art is simple.
I am a 55 year old male photographer with an art degree.

In the Fine Art World (museums, galleries, curators, and the artists they curate), art is generally defined as something that calls itself art. It might be bad art, but as long as someone claims to be an artist, and they claim the work as their work, then it is considered to be so. Duchamp's "Readymades" are considered to be Art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Readymades_… and so are Sherri Levine's appropriations of Walker Evan's photographs. (Duchamp put ordinary, mass-produced objects like a urinal or bicycle wheel in the gallery and called them art, and Sherrie Levine rephotographed Walker Evan's photographs, and called them "After Walker Evans" and exhibited them as her own.) And that's only for starters. Postmodernism came and went, and completely rewrote traditional ideas of what is and isn't art.

In the art world itself, there is no question as to whether fashion photography is art; it is if it says it is. And there is a long history of fashion photographers exhibiting in fine art galleries and museums, like Edward Steichen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Stei… or David LaChapelle (http://www.davidlachapelle.com/home.html… The only controversy left is among people outside the art world.

This is argumentative; to say that Fashion is art is one thing but to put photography as art is to join two distinctly different means and call them one.

I'm not a fashion photographer yet my models wear fashionable outfits sometimes for their portfolios. Maybe I'm shooting fashion, but my intent is to capture mood and beauty, artistically but not in an art sense.

My artistic inclinations are included in my photography but I don't think Fashion Photography (two words that, when put together defy the art category) can be called Art.

There will always be a debate on whether or not a photograph becomes art after certain manipulations are performed and looses it's integrity as a photograph. That is the miracle of digital media and, since so much can now be done outside of the 'digital darkroom' to enhance photographs in fashion or in any means, calling Photography 'Art' will stimulate extreme and heated debate.

Is Fashion Photography an Art Form?... on that, I can say yes but it certainly is not, in my professional opinion, Art in and of itself.

Hello,

that's a really interesting question, without knowing whether you're coming at this from the fashion or photography angle I'll do my best to stay balanced.

Some of my favourite photographers work, or have worked, in fashion. For a lot of photographers fashion allows them to experiment a little or a lot and continue to develop their artistic side.

Fashion photographers will certainly see themselves as artists, I'm sure. I think it's also true that fashion photography influences commercial photography in the same way that commercial fashion is directly influenced by catwalk fashion.

I think if high fashion is the art of clothes and Michelin-star restaurants are the art of food then it stands to reason that fashion photography is the art of the photographic industry.

Most great artists, Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Motzart, Dickens had 'commercial' day jobs as many fashion photographers might consider their fashion work. I couldn't post this without asking you take a look at David LaChappelle, I love his work but couldn't begin to tell you where fashion ended and art began!

Last year I went to the photographers' gallery and saw some fashion photography, presented as art, and it was superb. I blogged my experience of fashion photography as art - http://www.whatseanwrote.com/2008/08/fas…

I could talk for hours about this! If you wanted to follow up I'm happy to answer a questionnaire, or chat with you on MSN with questions if that would help.

Best of luck with your dissertation.

Look at schools in NYC! There are so many excellent art schools, and you would be in a city with so many artistic opportunities. What kind of art do you want to do? There are lots of options depending on what your looking for. You should look into Parsons School of Design, Pratt, FIT, and School of Visual Arts. Just Google the names and you will find the websites.

I will initiate my training program based on my new philosophy of mind and new philosophy of fine art. My theory clarify most misconceptions in art history. My training not only provides training on art but more importantly lifts trainees to a great soul status that leads to outstanding creativity and leadership. The program produces future great people.

The best art school in the US, and one of the best in the world, is the Rhode Island School of Design. It's really very, very good. Great location, too, in the middle of a small city, and right across the street from Brown University.

Another one that's really strong is the Cooper Union, in NYC. A major advantage to the Cooper Union is that not only is it prestigious, but if you can get in, the tuition is free.

Other extremely strong art programs include those at: The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Yale, California Institute of the Arts, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Art Center College of Design, UCLA, Virginia Commonwealth U, Carnegie Mellon, School of Visual Arts, and quite a few others.
